Visiting Big Sur?

Follow these guidelines for a memorable trip and to preserve the destination's beauty for future visitors.

Here's a list of advice for visiting Big Sur responsibly and respectfully:

  •  No Campfires Out of Season:

    • Avoid having campfires outside of designated seasons to prevent the risk of wildfires.

  •  Campfire Permits:

    • During campfire season, apply for a permit from Los Padres National Forest. Link to apply.

  •  Pack It In, Pack It Out:

    • Practice Leave No Trace principles by carrying out all your trash and leaving the area as you found it.

  •  Respectful Behavior:

    • Be considerate of your neighbors and the wildlife. Minimize amplified noise and the use of generators to preserve the tranquility of the area.

  •  4x4 Roads Only:

    • Use 4x4 vehicles only on the roads, and refrain from driving vehicles not meant for off-road conditions. This ensures safety and protects the environment.

  •  Stay on County Roads:

    • Stick to designated county roads and respect the privacy of property owners in the area.

  •  Emergency Assistance:

    • In the backcountry of South Coast Big Sur, if you encounter an emergency, flag down a Big Sur South Coast Fire Foundation patrol unit for access to a satellite phone.

  • Conserve Water:

    • Use water judiciously and avoid contaminating natural water sources. Carry a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste.

  •  Check Weather Forecasts:

    • Stay informed about weather conditions, as they can change rapidly. Pack accordingly with layers and waterproof gear.

  •  Responsible Pet Ownership:

    • If bringing pets, ensure they are allowed and keep them on a leash. Pack out their waste to maintain cleanliness.
